Snow and Cookies

2005-12-09
What is it about heavy snow and baking?

Last night we were to get a major snowstorm. DH is out of town, and Fantasy Boy and I made sure we knew where the extra water, flashlights and blankets were. We had an emergency plan set up to keep the piggies and ourselves warm, in case we lost power.

Fantasy Boy hates storms of any type. And although he's really enjoyed the excitement of flashlights, candlelight, special things out of the routine on those occasional times when we have lost power, the mere idea of losing power makes him very uncomfortable.

So, how do you comfort a 12-year-old, "I'm-not-really-scared-but-would-you-not-leave-my-side?", child?

Well, you bring out the big guns. Home baked cookies.

It's just very hard to feel scared when the smell of baking cookies permeates the house. And even harder when you're biting into a thin, chewy, warm layer of butter, flour, sugar and melting chocolate.

And don't forget the milk.

By the time two of these were administered, two glasses of milk had been consumed, and we'd watched moments forty through twenty of "The Best 101 Moments of SNL", all was right with the world.

And Fantasy Boy slept through the night, as the snow swirled around us, quietly and softly.

And we still have power.

What's Cooking

We probably can't get off the road today, as we're a tertiary road and there are 5 - 8 inches of snow outside. Given that, I think I'm making crockpot chicken and dumplings as I still don't have a cooktop. It was supposed to get installed today, but that's not very likely. We still have some cookies, and I may bake bread.
